Kalonzo Musyoka Announces Azimio Rebrand to Ukombozi Alliance, Says Opposition Is ‘On the Move’

NAIROBI, Kenya | September 21, 2026 — Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has announced the rebranding of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition to the Ukombozi Alliance, as opposition leaders step up efforts to consolidate their ranks ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a press briefing in Nairobi on Monday at the SKM Command Centre, Kalonzo said the coalition had agreed to adopt the new name, with the necessary formal changes to be undertaken to give effect to the decision.

“The United must agree to reprint and change the name to the Ukombozi Alliance. All the necessary actions attendant to that decision will be undertaken expeditiously. We want the country to note we are on the move,” Kalonzo said.

Uhuru Set to Convene Jubilee Meeting

Kalonzo said former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who chairs the coalition, had held discussions with him and was expected to convene a Jubilee Party meeting to consider the next steps.

“I had a lengthy discussion with him this morning and tomorrow he is convening a Jubilee Party meeting to be able to make necessary and important decisions, after which the same will be communicated to the Ukombozi Alliance so that we move together and in unison,” Kalonzo said.

Kalonzo Defends Uhuru

Kalonzo also criticised recent remarks by President William Ruto concerning Kenyatta, rejecting attempts to frame the emerging political contest as a rivalry between the two former presidents

.“It is not. It is not,” Kalonzo said, arguing that the contest ahead would instead involve the current administration, opposition leaders and Kenyan voters.

He also rejected the description of Kenyatta as a “rebel leader”, pointing to Kenya’s constitutional provision for a multi-party political system.Kalonzo welcomed a recent court decision concerning Kenyatta’s eligibility to hold political office, saying the matter had been clarified.

“We will be the ones responding to William Ruto, not Uhuru Kenyatta, because he wants to draw him into a very unnecessary contest, and Uhuru Kenyatta said no,” he said.

James Orengo Pushes for United Opposition

Meanwhile, Senior Counsel James Orengo, who had accompanied the Wiper boss during the briefing, called for greater opposition unity, saying the ongoing consultations were aimed at building a single, coordinated political coalition.

Orengo said the opposition needed a clearly defined objective and a coordinated strategy ahead of the 2027 General Election.

“The opposition in Kenya must be like a guided missile, where the target is set, the destination is set, the speed of that missile is set, and all that remains is to hit the target,” Orengo said.

He said the opposition’s focus should remain on delivering the political change its supporters are seeking at the next General Election.Orengo also criticised remarks attributed to President Ruto concerning Kenyatta and the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, saying the opposition would respond to the President at an appropriate time.

He urged opposition leaders to accelerate their consultations and organisational efforts as they work towards consolidating the coalition.
