Wiper Patriotic Front Clarifies Kalonzo-Muthama Meeting, Dismisses Claims He Is Joining Government

NAIROBI, Kenya | October 3, 2026 — The Wiper Patriotic Front Party has clarified the circumstances surrounding a recent meeting between its leader, Kalonzo Musyoka, and former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama, dismissing claims that the talks were aimed at negotiating Kalonzo’s entry into the government.

Speaking during a press briefing on Saturday afternoon, party chairperson Jamleck Kamau said the October 1 meeting, held at his residence in Lavington, Nairobi, was part of efforts to reunite leaders and strengthen the opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Kamau said the meeting was attended by Kalonzo, Muthama, former Kitui East MP Julius Kiema Kilonzo, Nyali MP Mohammed Ali, popularly known as Jicho Pevu, and himself.

His remarks came amid speculation over the purpose and venue of the meeting, with Kamau clarifying that it was held at his residence and not at either Kalonzo’s or Muthama’s home, as had been reported.

The party chairperson said engagement with Muthama had started several months earlier, with an August meeting focusing on strengthening Wiper and consolidating its support base, particularly in the Lower Eastern region.

“After the lunch meeting, I came and briefed my party boss, Honourable Kalonzo Musyoka, on the deliberations that we had with Honourable Muthama, and he was very happy that we were able to organise our son to come back home,” he said.

Kamau said the October 1 meeting was subsequently organised to explore ways of bringing more leaders and supporters together around the Wiper party.

Wiper Says Muthama Talks Were About Opposition Consolidation

Kamau rejected reports suggesting that Muthama had been sent to negotiate with Kalonzo over joining the government.

“The main intention and the reason why we called for that meeting, as I said earlier, was to ensure that we bring our people together,” he said.

He added that Wiper was seeking to strengthen its support base and work with leaders who could contribute to the opposition’s efforts ahead of the 2027 elections.Kamau also claimed that Wiper was engaging other Kenyans and government officials whom he said could eventually leave the Kenya Kwanza administration.

“I will not disclose the names, but I can assure you there are many of them. We are talking to them, and very soon you’ll see an exodus of leaders from that side of Kenya Kwanza to the United Alternative Government,” he said.

The party chairperson further distanced Wiper Patriotic Front from suggestions that the meeting was linked to negotiations to join the government.

He said he had previously declined approaches to work with UDA and had more recently rejected an opportunity to participate in government-linked political activities.

“My conscience is extremely clear. I will never want to work with any government that has done what it has done to Kenyans today,” Kamau said.

He accused the government of corruption and human rights violations, allegations he cited as reasons for his opposition to working with the administration.

Kamau further claimed that Muthama and Kalonzo had not spoken directly for about four years before their recent engagement.

“And anybody purporting to say that Senator Muthama is Honourable Kalonzo’s Mr Fix-It person is completely lost,” he said.

Wiper Defends Kalonzo’s Opposition Position

Kamau maintained that Kalonzo remained committed to the opposition and would not be involved in negotiations to join the government.

He said Wiper’s focus was instead on consolidating the opposition ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.

Kamau also said the party would advise Kalonzo to avoid responding directly to personal attacks from President William Ruto.According to Kamau, Kalonzo should instead concentrate on presenting himself as a presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 election.

Kiema Kilonzo Calls for Kamba Leaders to Unite

Former Kitui East MP Julius Kiema Kilonzo, who also addressed the briefing, said efforts were underway to bring Kamba leaders together behind Kalonzo.

“We are determined to bring all the leaders, the Kamba leaders, to come behind Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka as we go to ask for votes from other communities,” Kilonzo said.

He cited former Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu and said the group was also reaching out to other prominent Kamba leaders, including Mutula Kilonzo Jr. and Kivutha Kibwana.

Kilonzo said the objective was to have Kamba leaders speak with one voice as the opposition seeks to mobilise support from other communities ahead of the 2027 General Election.
